Anthony D. Andre, Ph.D., CPE

ANTHONY D. ANDRE received his Ph.D. in Engineering Psychology (Human Factors and Ergonomics) from the University of Illinois in 1991. He is also a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), recognized by the Board of Certification of Professional Ergonomists (BCPE).

In 1993, he founded Interface Analysis Associates (IAA), a Human Factors, Usability & Ergonomics consulting firm specializing in the design, analysis and usability testing of software/hardware user interfaces, computer input devices and ergonomic products, high-tech consumer products, software and Web applications, medical and life-saving devices, work environments and aerospace/automotive systems. Dr. Andre, along with his staff at IAA, has evaluated, usability tested and designed over 400 consumer products and human interface systems. IAA's design of a bio-tech software application was voted the Best New Life Science Product in 2008. In 2009 IAA was the recipient of the User-Centered Design Award, given out by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Prior to IAA, Dr. Andre was a Principal Scientist at NASA, where he headed the control/display evaluation laboratory and developed next-generation interfaces for aircraft cockpits and air traffic management systems.

As a co-founder of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Graduate Program at San Jose State University, Dr. Andre has served as an Adjunct Professor of Ergonomics and Human Factors in the departments of Psychology and Industrial & Systems Engineering since 1993. He teaches graduate seminars and courses on workplace ergonomics, cognitive engineering, engineering psychology, research methods, usability testing, human factors experiments and professional issues. In 2009, Dr. Andre was selected to receive the San Jose State University College of Engineering's award for Outstanding Lecturer, given to only one adjunct faculty member each year in recognition of continuing excellence in teaching, service, and research that is above and beyond the expectations of his or her assignments. In addition, Dr. Andre was recognized by the University for 15 years of service in both the Psychology and Industrial & Systems Engineering Departments (as part of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Graduate Program).

Dr. Andre also holds various professional positions. He is currently the President-Elect of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and was previously the Domain Leader of Internal Affairs for HFES, amongst other positions in this society. He is a past Contributing Editor of Ergonomics in Design, a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Aviation Psychology, Past Director of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Bay Area Chapter, Member of the Typing Injury FAQ Advisory Board, member of the HealthyComputing.com Advisory Board and a Founding Member of the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Ergonomics Institute.

Dr. Andre has received numerous awards and honors. He was the first recipient of the Earl Alluisi Award for Early Career Achievement, awarded by the American Psychological Association (APA), Division of Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychologists. In 1996, he received the Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award for his article "Better Taxiway Surface Markings, Safer Airports." In 1999 he received the SAE Wright Brothers Memorial Award for "An Evaluation of the Taxiway Navigation and Situation Awareness (T-NASA) System in High-Fidelity Simulation". This award is given to 'the best paper relating to the invention, development, design, construction or operation of an aircraft and/or spacecraft."

Dr. Andre is the author of over 120 publications and has presented numerous invited addresses, panel presentations, technical lectures and workshops and seminars on various human factors, usability and workplace ergonomics topics.

In 2013, after 20 years of a brilliant career, Dr. Leon Segal rejoined Interface Analysis Associates as VP Innovation, bringing with him his unique skills and extensive global experience.

Dr. Leon Segal was an original partner in Interface Analysis Associates with Dr. Anthony Andre. Leon is a cognitive psychologist with over two decades of experience in the application of cognitive science and ergonomics to product innovation and team creativity. He has used the analysis of people's everyday experience, and the subsequent emergence of empathy, to conceptualize new designs in a broad range of contexts: from aircraft cockpits and medical products, through consumer products to retail and office environments.

Leon has worked with a diverse range of leading companies worldwide, including 3M, AIG, BMW, IDEO, Israel Discount Bank, Kaiser Permanente, Medtronic, Microsoft, NASA, Palm and Steelcase. He is founder of LivingPatterns (2002) and Innovationship (2012). His assertion that "Innovation begins with an eye" has been quoted in leading books on innovation, and his original concept of "Consequential communication" continues to be studied in leading universities around the world.

Jennifer received her Master’s degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. Previously, Jennifer earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her Master’s thesis, A Comparison of Three-Level Web Menu Structures for Web Design, examined the optimal presentation of multi-level menu structures for commercial web sites. Though born and raised in New York State, she is an avid San Jose Sharks fan and loves sushi, wine tasting, and international travel.

Carson received his Master's degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. Previously, Carson received a B.S. in Psychology with a Certificate in Human Factors from the University of Utah. During his time at the U of U he also worked in and managed a team in the Applied Basic Cognition Lab. Carson is devoted to using effective research, design, and canned soda to improve the understanding, usability, user satisfaction, and safety of products. When he is not performing miracles with human factors, Carson enjoys building things with his hands and spending time with his family.

Maggie received her Master's degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. Maggie received a B.S. in Psychology (with a Certificate in Human Factors) and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Utah, in 2008. Prior to joining IAA, she interned at NASA Ames Research Center. During her time at NASA Ames, she completed her thesis relating to level of automation and failure frequency effects on simulated lunar lander performance, which was included in the 2014 IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings. Maggie also has experience in Sales and Marketing and is fluent in Spanish. On her time off, she enjoys attending Giants games and running half marathons.

Joe Masquelier

Industrial & Graphic Designer

Joe is an industrial and graphic designer based out of the Bay Area/Tri-Valley, and supports Interface Analysis Associates (IAA) on many instructional design and illustration projects. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from San Jose State University, Joe became the founding principal of MasqDesign—an industrial and graphic design consultancy. In addition to collaborating with IAA on medical device illustration and instructional layout design, MasqDesign supports clients across the biomedical, information technology, UX, and consumer electronics industries, supplying both early-phase product visualization and mar/comm brand collateral.

Joe also works as a full-time furniture designer, where he incorporates his passion for design with a strong knowledge of ergonomics and usability standards to create many leading home office and home entertainment products around the world.

Joe is an avid CrossFitter, classic car enthusiast, and long time season ticket holder for the San Francisco 49ers.

Before joining IAA, Jeana worked at Marketshare, Inc. for 20 years as a Corporate Services Director managing their Accounting and Administration departments. With a Certification in Nursing and Human Resources Management and over 20+ years of experience in Business Administration along with a passion for meeting people, this seemed to be a perfect fit. In her spare time, Jeana enjoys crafting, volunteering, and spending time with family and friends.

He studied Psychology and Criminal Justice at DeAnza College. Vic enjoys anything relating to art and audio, snowboarding, wake boarding, and trying to put all those things together at once.

Gowa received her Master's degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. In addition, she has received a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from California State University, Northridge and a B.A. in Cognitive Psychology from University of California, Irvine. Her culminating Master’s project compared data wrangling software tools with particular interest in how data visualization and automation improve user performance. Gowa enjoys studying user interaction with devices and software to inform intelligent, user-centered design. Other passions include hiking, yoga, tennis and traveling.

Mark received his Master’s degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. With over nine years of experience conducting social and behavioral research and evaluations, Mark has led studies aimed to improve performance and learning across a range of products, systems and spaces. From this work, he has consulted in various industries including healthcare, medical, education, consumer products, and surface transportation. Prior to joining IAA, Mark conducted research with colleagues at Santa Clara University, Columbia University, and Yale University on risk-taking, memory, and creativity. In addition to guest lecturing at universities and presenting at professional conferences, he has served as a guest editor for Learning and Individual Differences and authored articles and book chapters on topics pertaining to organizational climate, conditions for learning, socialization, systemic organizational reform, and built environments. Mark was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and gets to enjoy a few pastimes on occasion including solving puzzles, cranking Pink Floyd, and learning about trains, cars, cities, and amusement parks.

Chris is a 2015 graduate of California Lutheran University, where he earned a BS in Biology while competing on the Men’s Varsity soccer team. Chris is currently pursuing a Master’s degree of Engineering in Human Factors & Ergonomics from San Jose State University. Outside of work, Chris is a diehard athlete who loves to enjoy nature through action sports, primarily surfing and rock climbing.
